Description

Without any prior degrees or legal experience, most students who wish to be paralegals in the state of California will need to take the Paralegal Certificate Course© and the Advanced Paralegal Certificate Course to be in compliance with California Business and Professions Code §6450. If you do have experience and/or a degree, please review the code to find out if you can qualify without taking the Advanced course.

These specialized classes are also available to students who wish to extensively build upon their knowledge of law and paralegal studies with classes in specialized facets of contemporary law. These classes build upon the nationally acclaimed Paralegal Certificate Course©, which is a prerequisite for the class.

Course Outline

The Advanced Paralegal Certificate Course is for Continuing Education Units only (CEUs). There are 15 different topics that cover various specific areas of law. Students must successfully complete six of these 15 topics to earn an Advanced Paralegal Certificate. Each topic must be completed in a seven-week session. Up to three Advanced Paralegal Course topics may be taken during a seven-week online session and topics do not have to be taken in any particular order. These courses are offered online only. Participants who successfully complete six of the topics required of the Advanced Paralegal Course will receive a certificate of completion from University of the Pacific.

Course Outline
Lesson 1: During this first section students will receive an introduction to the theory of law, the legal process, and the nature of the practice of law. Discussion will include the process of law as well as the specific legal terminology. Ethics are also covered.

Lesson 2: This section addresses the particulars of law office management. This session also studies technology used in the law office. Students will be exposed to actual court documents and will prepare some of these documents as part of their homework. 

Lesson 3: The final section will be spent examining the intricacies of the law office, including office procedure manuals, billing techniques, and overall management techniques of the law office. Students will also be introduced to the basics of legal research and proper citation format. Job search strategies and placement possibilities will also be discussed.

The Online Paralegal Certificate Course© is completed in 2 consecutive 7-week sessions, and students can begin with any session offered.

Provides the foundation for the study of paralegalism. During this part of the course, we will provide a detailed understanding of the American legal system, legal terminology, and ethics. Instruction will include how to prepare pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs and will review the rules of evidence and civil procedure.

Paralegal II (Seven Weeks- 45 Hours)

Continues the legal education developed in Paralegal I. This part of the course provides instruction on more advanced paralegal skills including legal research, writing, and proper citation format. Course topics also include how to prepare important legal documents relating to real property, corporations, partnerships, wills, trusts, bankruptcy, and domestic relations. Formal and informal advocacy techniques and principles of appellate procedure will also be covered.
