Nineteenth century China was a tumultuous place, as wars and eventually revolution forever changed the lives of its people. Amid this internal struggle, many looked across the seas to restore family fortunes and seek a better life. Lured by the promise of riches at Gold Mountain, numerous pioneers crossed the Pacific and became miners, railroad workers, and farmers. Some would permanently settle, establishing the first Chinatowns, including Stockton’s very own ‘Samfow.’ The Second World War would dramatically alter the situation again, and finally open the door to immigrants who were previously unwelcomed.
